How they Met:
Sam and I met when we were sophomores in college at the University of Central Missouri. We both were involved in Greek life and met through mutual friends. The night Sam and I met, I immediately went home and told my roommate that I was going to date him one day! We both knew that together was our favorite place to be!
The Proposal:
After 4 and a half years Sam decided it was time for an engagement! On our wedding day I told Sam, “Its hard to believe we are here on our wedding day, but at the same time I think we both knew we would end up here together.” Sam planned a very special and sentimental way to pop the question.
I was teaching special education at my alma mater high school, St. James Academy. At the time I was the head cheer leading coach as well. One night, at a big basketball game Sam drove up from Saint Louis (like he did most weekends) to stand by me while I coach, but this time was a little different. At halftime, after a student had just made a half-court shot to win $1,000, Sam pulled me on the court to see my cheer leading team holding up signs that said: “Audrey will you marry me.” He got down on one knee and the crowd went crazy. Of course I said “YES.” As I did, many family and friends that were hiding in the crowd stormed the court! We left the game and was surprised at a bar by about 70 of our family and friends.
Wedding Planning:
As we began wedding planning, we decided our goal was to incorporate as many family and friends as we could. We had 10 bridesmaids, 10 groomsmen, and 3 ushers. You may think we were crazy there, but just you wait. On top of that, we had 16 flower girls and 8 ring bearers. (If you can’t tell, we have a lot of people we love and big families.)
Another thing that was super important to us was our attitude through the planning process. It is a lot of work organizing all the things involved in a wedding. Sam and I hung on to a saying we had heard from another couple, “Too happy to care.” There are many details that go into a wedding and many things that can go wrong. So, when things did go wrong, big or small, we held onto each other and remembered “Too happy to care.”
I think one of my favorite moments of wedding planning was when I asked Sam what kind of dress he pictured me in and he literally recited all the details of my dress. My favorite memory the day of our wedding was saying our vows in the church were I was raised. In the end, knowing that our family and friends were celebrating beside us was one of the most important things to us and we are so blessed to have been given the support that we had on our special wedding day!
