Adleigh came to Kansas City from Iowa with a specific style in mind. In fact she had found a gown, classic lines, open back and slinky fit – very clean and simple. With her ideas in mind, we had just the gown for her: Barcelona by Katie May. This is a gown with a wow-factor and perfectly suited for their 1920s hotel venue. Meeting:
It is a love story that was more than a year in the making. Literally.
More than a year before they actually met, Adleigh’s Aunt Susie, who worked at the school district with Chace, told Chace she had the perfect girl for him – her niece. As months passed Susie held out hope that she could somehow get these two to meet. That finally happened in June. June 24, 2014 to be exact. A Tuesday at Backpocket Brewery, a local pub in Coralville, Iowa. At the end of a long day of work for Adleigh and a day of intense World Cup soccer watching for Chace, Susie finally had her opening. An opportunity to make an introduction. Plenty of details from the actual meeting and the months that followed could be shared, but it is probably fitting to simply say that Susie was right all along…
The Proposal:
While a simple proposal, it was surrounded by complicated circumstances. A birthday happy hour, friends traveling – but not really traveling – through town, and an erased chalkboard all went into making the proposal a total surprise. On Friday, June 26, 2015 (364 days after our first date), we went from dating to engaged! As it did on our first date, rain poured down the day we got engaged, which meant it was probably a safe bet that we should plan for a day of rain on our wedding.
The Wedding Weekend
The wedding festivities took place at the Hotel Julien on historic Main Street in Dubuque, Iowa. Located in the northeast corner of Iowa, Dubuque is nestled among rolling hills and rests on a bluff overlooking the beautiful Mississippi River. The day was beautiful spotlighted by near constant sunshine, which was interrupted only once by an intense rain shower just as we finished pictures. A close call but a trolley and some quick dashing by the wedding party ensured that pictures were perfect and everyone stayed wedding ready rather than thunderstorm soaked.
While the wedding was a romantic and reverent ceremony, the wedding weekend was encapsulated by fun and spending time with family and friends. The importance of the day (and weekend) was heightened by sharing the special moments with those that were closest to us. The weekend started with a dinner at the Mississippi Aquarium and River Museum. Everyone was able to enjoy a tremendous meal while surrounded by fresh water alligators, fish of all shapes and sizes and the living history of Mississippi River legends like Samuel Clemons (ie. Mark Twain) adding to the magic of the evening.
Classic elegance meets modern chicis the best way to describe the wedding day. Set against the backdrop of a classic 1920’s style hotel – that was once owned by Al Capone, the wedding was humble but incorporated acoustical guitar music, readings from modern and classical literature, as well as a traditional Hawaiian lei ceremony. A two story open atrium with a grand stair case in the middle provided the venue for cocktail hour. Given while perched on the landing of the grand staircase, halfway between the two levels, speeches welcomed guests and also cleared the way for the rest of the night to simply be a celebration! The grand ballroom, which also hosted the ceremony, was transformed into a visual wonderland of food stations, various table configurations, stunning dessert displays and a ruckus dance floor. A photo booth added to the phone, and the simple “let’s have a party” attitude kept the festivities operating at high volume until late in the night.
While the wedding may have only been a day, the festivities did not end when the last song closed the reception. A picnic lunch overlooking the river on the following day punctuated the whimsical and fun wedding weekend festivities. Guests mingled, played yard games, took in the breathtaking views of the Mississippi, and ate from a food truck! This was no ordinary picnic, rather a local food truck provided made to order meals for guests as they recapped the weekend fun.
East by Midwest
While this romance story was already filled with all the necessary elements of a good fairy tale, the most exciting adventure for the couple was just beginning. Because planning a wedding is not difficult or stressful enough, the couple was in the middle of relocating to the Washington, D.C. area. Chace made the move in January with Adleigh moving right after the wedding. The stage was set to not only begin a new life together as husband and wife but for the curtain to rise on a wonderful new chapter many many miles from where the story originally began. The Midwest will always be home for Adleigh and Chace, but Arlington, Virginia will provide the backdrop for the first year (and potentially a few more) of the next adventure …
